“BORN To RUN” 50 years ago I set the all time Jersey Shore 2 Mile HS record 9:16 GREAT MEMORIES
Bullet Point List for easier read lots of E Street Band Bruce Connections
1. With Max Weinburg drummer E Street Band signing a drum skin to Mr Born to Run. Max’s son went to Rumson Fair Haven HS
2. Ran by Bruce Springsteen’s old house on Ridge Road 1000’s of times.
3. Broke a other Russ record previous held by Russ Taintor Brick Township HS 9:20 in 1968.
4. Followed it up one month later by winning 1973 the NJ Meet of Champions besting the top runners in the state. Have a great story on that very few people know about, more that on a June post.
5. Photo of my 50 year old Reebok Shoes

Jersey Shore High School Record 1973

50 years ago today I created a memory that will last a lifetime.
Bullet point list for easier read of fun and interesting stories.

1. The drinking age got pushed back to 18 in 1973 in NJ, took advantage of it was in the local pub in Sea Bright having a few beers at midnight with HS Bud after parking cars at the Fromargarie restaurant in Rumson. On that note I truly believe it helped me win in the 90+heat/humidity for the noon race, the 18 year drinking age only lasted a few years.

2. Fun story on parking cars, the Fromargarie was close to Monmouth horse race track, big winners would eat at the restaurant come out and ask get my car back in 30 seconds and you got yourself 10 or 20 tip 50 years ago that was one great gratuity. Little did they know I set the all time Jersey Shore HS record.

3. As a coach I’m a big believer in race specific training and it all started 50 years ago. My gym class was at noon every day same time as the championship HS event knowing it was going to be hot went out on tough runs in the noon heat through the streets of Rumson.

4. Winning time 9:20 in the heat/humidity and on an old cinder track not conducive to fast times. I won the event by 13 seconds for my non running friends at a championship event that is a huge margin especially since there was a 4:07 HS miler and future sub 2:20 marathon runners in the field.

5. Went through the first mile in 4:36 with most of the field on the bell last lap looked back and could not see anyone knowing that why push it and cramp and not win far more important versus a fast time. On the final lap I was lapping runners unheard of in a state championship race. Beer and race specific training paid dividends.

6. 1964 the USA Track and Field Championships were held on the same Rutgers cinder track.

Triathlons a way of life for Jones

Russ Jones is a fast-talking, fast-moving, perpetually enthusiastic and decorated link to triathlon's past.

Jones can recite dates, times and names from races 30 years ago and has a house full of trophies, medals and plaques from more than 1,000 triathlons, duathlons and road races. And at 59, Jones is no athletic dinosaur, content to simply rest and reminisce.

Russ Jones remembers his first triathlon like it was yesterday. Of course, it helps when you still have the trophy—believed to be the first ever awarded in the sport—to keep your memory sharp.
